Epic Mountain Bike Rides - Great Mountain Biking in Crested Butte, Colorado
Summary
The Crested Butte & Gunnison Area is home to the oldest mountain bike festival in the world. The annual event marks a moment in history that some say was the beginning of the sport. In 1976 residents of Crested Butte set out for Aspen cycling over Pearl Pass on their one-speed klunkers. A group of Californians that had been experimenting with fat-tired bikes found out about the trek and showed up the next year marking the beginning of the annual Pearl Pass Tour.
The mountain biking terrain ranges from sage country near Gunnison to alpine singletrack surrounding Crested Butte. Because of Crested Butte's considerable altitude, about 9,000', many trails are not rideable until mid summer so plan accordingly.
Depending on where you stay, you can either spend your evenings in the town of Gunnison, or up the road 30 miles at the town of Crested Butte, or just two miles further at Mt. Crested Butte. Each town is successively smaller and there are places to camp in-between.
