Furtado Wins First '96 World Cup
Having finished second in the first three World Cup events this year, Juli Furtado (GT) finally broke the curse. Alison Sydor (Volvo/Cannondale), who has won the previous three World Cup races, crashed on a Saturday training ride and only finished 11th giving Furtado the overall World Cup lead.
The men's field saw Miguel Martinez (Sunn-Chipie) win his first ever World Cup event finishing 39 seconds ahead of Thomas Frischnecht (Ritchey). With Tinker Juarez out of the picture after flatting twice, the men's field continued to be dominated by the Europeans. The top placing US rider was John Tomac (Giant/Tioga) finishing 4:40 back in 12 place. Next best, Don Myrah (Volkswagen/Trek), finished 24th.
