Sydor Wins, Hoydahl Repeats
Mount Snow, Vermont
Sydor wins...again. Sounds familiar doesn't it. After winning six out of the seven World Cup XC events this year, Alison Sydor (Volvo-Cannondale) seems unbeatable. With the Olympics just a month away, it doesn't look like anyone can match Alison's level of performance this year.
Finishing 2:03 behind Sydor was Ruthie Matthes (Volvic-PowerBar) followed by Susan DeMattei (Diamondback) in third at 3:24, and Tammy Jacques (Schwinn) at 7:05.
John Tomac crossing the finish line in sixth place. The men's XC race saw Rune Hoydahl (Giant) repeat last year's win at Mt. Snow. Hoydahl, who had an outstanding year in 1995, has been fairly quite in 1996. But Saturday's win, along with a string of top ten World Cup placings, have kept Rune within striking distance of the point standing leaders Miguel Martinez, Thomas Frischneckt, Chistophe Dupouey & Lennie Kristensen.
Two top ten placings made this the best World Cup performance of 1996 for the United States. John Tomac (Giant), who has been coming on strong in recent weeks, finished ahead of fellow American Tinker Juarez (Volvo-Cannondale) in sixth place. Tinker's seventh place finish is his best World Cup performance of the year, and as one of the US Olympic representatives, was an encouraging sign of the possibility for the US to metal in Atlanta next month.
