Rishi Grewal Ends Drought @ Big Bear
Snow Summit, CAJuly 14th, 1996
Ending a four year drought, Rishi Grewal (Klein) won the last Sunday's NORBA Jeep National Championship Series @ Big Bear. After four NCS races, Grewal, who finished 15th in the 1995 National Points Standings, now sits in 5th place, just 23 points behind leader Don Myrah (Trek/VW). Myrah, who will be representing the US in Atlanta next week, also had a strong race, finishing 5th at Sunday's event. His Olympic teammate, Tinker Juarez (Volvo/Cannondale), did not finish as he elected to pull out in lap #2 after feeling sick. John Tomac, who has been riding extremely well, finished a disappointing 44th, 21 minutes behind Grewal.
The women's event saw Susan DeMattei (Diamondback) blow away the rest of the field, finishing 1:45 ahead of Beth Coats (KHS). DeMattei appears to be in the best form of her life. The timing couldn't be better for DeMattei, who will race with teammate Juli Furtado (GT), in next weeks Olympic mountain bike event. Furtado, who is a definate metal contender, has been dealing with the death of GT President Richard Long. Long was killed when he was hit while riding his Harley to the event at Snow Summit. In a tribute to Richard, Juli stopped just before the finish line, allowing Tammy Jaques (Schwinn) to pass her, to cross with fellow GT employees and teammates.
